Improving Your Self-Image Helps Improve Your Life

Author: Jordi Shoman

Your self-image is what you think of yourself. It defines hoe you feel others see you and no matter how rich or famous you are, there is always something about your self-image that you want to improve. Everyone strives to be better, not better than other people, but just to be a better person. When you have a poor self-image, you have negative thoughts about yourself. Although the best advice is to try to change your thinking to positive thoughts, this is easier said than done.

Take a look at your life and if you are really serious about making a change to your self-image, have a pen and paper so you can jot down your thoughts. Make a list of all the things you like about yourself and then a list of all the things that you don't like. In your negative list, choose the one thing you feel is most important - the one thing that you really feel you will have to change. Then you can start plotting the course to achieve this. Focus on one thing at a time and chances are you will find that other changes occur as a result.

Give yourself a goal and make objectives that you want to reach for each step of the process. For example, if you want to quit smoking, you can start by making a conscious effort to quit. Choose a date and start from there. You can quit cold turkey, use the Nicotine Patch or gum or cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke a day. Another way you can do this is to write down the reasons that you smoke - what circumstances or places bring on the cravings. Maybe eliminating some of the circumstances can help you achieve your goal.

Take a look at the way you behave. There may be something about this that you feel turns people off. Do you talk about yourself too much or brag about your children? Trying to give other people the chance to get a word in once in a while is a good way to start or ask them about their lives and family instead of focusing on your problems. Think of a person that turns you off and determine if you have some of the same qualities that others might see in you. This will give you a good place to start when you want to make changes in your self-image.
