As the search engines become more and more competitive you would be forgiven for thinking that getting your small site on the first page is an impossible task. Search engines are now taking more and more external factors when summing up where a site should be ranked, such as the age of the domain and the number of inbound links to the site from other web sites. So how can you ensure that your business utilises the power of the internet? Well how about internet directories?

More and more directories are popping up on the web, some for very niche categories and others for a wide range of subjects, the important thing from your business point of view is that you gain exposure on relevant directories to increase the chances of your business flourishing.

For example, say you run a golf club in brighton and you want to promote it on the web, getting a high ranking in the search engines for terms such golf clubs or even golf clubs in brighton would be extremely difficult. However there will be a number of sites that do come up the ranking which are more directories, or guides to golf and if you can get your businesses listed on these sites, then you have every chance of being found by a golfer fancying a game in Brighton! Often inclusion in these directories is free but even if they are not the cost could be a small price to pay for the extra business generated.

So next time you are typing keywords into the search engines and wishing your site would appear, why not look at the sites which do appear and if possible try to get a listing with them.
